Liaison librarians
A liaison librarian has been appointed to each faculty to assist staff with library requirements. Liaison librarians:
-
select library resources in consultation with teachers
-
conduct library tours, research skills and information literacy sessions
-
liaise with faculty staff for the continued improvement of the library website, by targeting useful websites and pertinent online resources.
If you would like to arrange an induction to the library for yourself or a new staff member please call your liaison librarian or the circulation desk Cairns (07) 4042 2539 or Innisfail (07) 4043 8635).

Borrowing rights
Staff may borrow up to 50 items for 4 weeks. (Videos/DVDs 1 week.) See loan information for further details.
Inter-library loans
Resources not held in our collection can be requested on your behalf from other libraries. Please keep in mind our obligation to return inter-library loans to the lending library in a timely manner. To use this service complete the request form held at the information desk.
Library tours and training for students
All classes need an orientation tour of the library to help students locate information and use available equipment. There are two types of library orientation tours for students.
The standard tour takes at least 50 minutes. Students have hands-on use of the library catalogue and are shown how to search for resources, other catalogue features and the library website. Use of computers in the ELC is also explained.
The short tour takes 30 minutes. Students have a quick go at searching the catalogue and are shown where relevant resources are held in the collection. Use of computers and equipment is also explained.
Library staff are also available to help classes with further research and to conduct sessions demonstrating the use of online resources. Contact your liaison librarian to discuss your needs. Please call the front desk at Cairns (07) 4042 2539 or Innisfail (07) 4043 8635, to book your students in for a tour.
Class use of the library
Feel free to bring your class to the library to research a topic. Large tables are set up for group work, while the individual study carrels may be used for groups taking assessment or for individuals wishing to work quietly.
Library guides
Subject guides
Subject guide hand-outs that highlight areas of the library collection for particular coursework are available.
New library titles
See the latest resources that have been added to the library. Click on a title in the list to go through to the catalogue where you can check availability or reserve the item.
Limited access
Limited access ensures that high use or in demand items are retained in the library for equitable student access. Select the resources you wish to have placed on limited access and bring them to the information desk.
These items will be placed on designated shelves and will not be available for student loan. Items are returned to the lending collection at the end of the semester.
Booking a video
If you want to show a video to a class on a particular day, fill in a video booking request form (available at the front counter). Library staff will ensure the video is located and put aside for you to pick up for your session.
Purchasing resources for the library
The library attempts to hold all text and reference items for courses run at the institute. It is up to teaching staff to inform the library which items need to be purchased.
When new or modified courses are introduced, please inform your liaison librarian as early as possible so resources can be purchased in time for the start of the course.
Normally a minimum of four (4) weeks is required to order a title, with overseas orders taking longer. Please let library staff know your requirements as far ahead as possible.
Verification of resources for course registration
Liaison librarians can produce bibliographic lists of resources held in specific subject areas to assist with course registration.
