Secondary students
Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE offers two innovative programs for school students SchoolTech and TAFESEC (TAFE Secondary).
SchoolTech
SchoolTech is a vocation-based senior school program jointly delivered by TAFE and Education Queensland.
SchoolTech provides a unique opportunity for far northern students to combine their senior school studies with real world training and employment.
Through SchoolTech, students complete Years 11 and 12 at the Cairns TAFE campus and undertake a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship in one of 10 vocational areas:
-
automotive
-
childcare
-
construction
-
cookery
-
diesel fitting
-
electrical
-
indigenous health
-
marine
-
metal fabrication
-
nursing
By completing school subjects alongside TAFE training, students are given the best possible opportunity to successfully complete their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and excel in their chosen career.
SchoolTech commences at the beginning of each year, in line with school semesters.

TAFESEC
TAFESEC programs provide training which leads to recognised VET qualifications and can be credited towards traineeships, apprenticeships, higher level qualifications or university.
Through TAFESEC, students attend TAFE one day per week as designated by their school.
Successful participation in TAFESEC programs can assist students in their transition to work. Courses are primarily open to Year 11 students, and where vacancies occur, to selected Year 10 and 12 students.

TAFESEC - delivering pathways to Greater possibilities

Education and training reforms for the future
The Queensland Government's Education and Training Reforms for the Future (ETRF) aim to ensure all young people between the ages of 15 and 17 are engaged in education, training or work - in other words, learning or earning. To achieve this, Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE is working closely with district high schools to develop initiatives which provide young people with the pathways they need to undertake training programs or enter the workforce.
