Skills First (RPL)
Skills First (Recognition of Prior Learning) recognises your existing experience gained through life or work for which you may not have obtained a formal qualification. We will work with you to identify your existing skills, and assess if you can then achieve a full or part qualification. This also helps to avoid unnecessary duplication of training, saving you time and money. More information on Skills First (RPL).

You will need to provide the following items at your own cost:

  • A notebook, pen and calculator is required for theory components.
  • Personal protective equipment including safety boots and eye protection will be required for welding components.

Appropriate clothing and protective footwear must be worn at all times.

TDMMB3507BEmploy damage control techniques for hull damage
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to implement correct damage control procedures following damage to a small commercial vessel's hull.
TDMME1107AContribute to effective communications and teamwork on a coastal vessel
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to contribute to effective communications and teamwork on board a coastal vessel, including communicating effectively with others, performing allocated duties and observing expected standards of work and behaviour on board a vessel.
TDMMF2707BPrevent, control and fight fires on board a small vessel
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to prevent, control and fight fires on board a small commercial vessel, including management of fire prevention measures, initiation and management of evacuation, emergency shut down and isolation procedures, and the execution and coordination of fire fighting operations for the type and size of vessel involved.
TDMMF407BMaintain the operational condition of lifesaving, firefighting and other safety systems
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to maintain the operational condition of lifesaving, firefighting and other safety systems, including the coordination of the monitoring of systems and their components to ensure that they function in the event of fire and other shipboard emergencies on board a commercial ocean-going vessel.
TDMMF4107BCarry out engineering calculations related to maintenance and operations
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to carry out engineering calculations and apply them to maintenance and operations decisions on a small vessel within the limits of responsibility of a Marine Engine Driver Grade 1.
TDMMR1907BSafely handle and stow explosive and flammable materials
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to safely handle and stow explosive and flammable materials including explosive liquids, gases, solids and other materials likely to be carried on a small vessel less than 1,500 KW propulsion power. In particular, this may include spare fuel, lubricants, LPG cooking gas, flares, liquid fuels and refigerant gases.
TDMMR207BUse and maintain deck equipment and machinery
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to organise the use and maintenance of deck machinery installed on a small commercial vessel.
TDMMR2407BOperate and maintain internal combustion engines and propulsion transmission systems
