Coxswains
Subjects from TDM20307 - Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations - Coxswain)
Description
This course provides students with the required skills and knowledge to safely operate a vessel less than 12m in length for trading and 15m in length for fishing. Students who have achieved competence in the course and have acquired the appropriate sea time may apply for a Certificate of Competence as Coxswain from Maritime Safety Queensland. People still accumulating sea time may be eligible for a restricted licence.

A Certificate of Competence as Coxswain entitles the holder to act as master on commercial ships less than 12m in length and fishing ships less than 15m in length within certain operational areas. It is a dual certificate, deck and engineering.
Careers & Pathways
This course provides a career progression for people who have worked on board commercial vessels as a general-purpose hand (or deckhand). It is also an entry level course for people that already have significant recreational boating experience and wish to seek work in command of a commercial vessel of less than 12m in length.
Entry Requirements
Students must be 18 years of age, have a minimum of year 10 with a sound achievement in English and Mathematics or the equivalent, or gain mature age entry.

Applicants will be required to complete an MSQ Workplace-Based Taskbook.

Pre-requisites (offered as separate courses)
Students must have successfully completed the following courses:



  • Elements of Shipboard Safety or Certificate of Safety Training
  • Marine Radio Operation
  • Senior First Aid Certificate (current)

The approximate cost to complete this qualification is: Standard $750.00 Concession $506.40 (further discounts apply if you hold a current MED3 qualification).

Study Mode
Full-time over four weeks - 8.30am to 4.30pm.

We will work with you to identify your existing skills, and assess if you can then achieve a full or part qualification. This also helps to avoid unnecessary duplication of training, saving you time and money. More information on Skills First (RPL).
Other information

You will need to supply the following items at your own cost:

*      Navigation instruments are required for chart work, as well as a calculator, 2B pencils, an eraser and the Small Ships Manual.

*      Notebook and pen required for theory components.

*      Copy of “Sea time assessment” from Maritime Safety Qld (if applicable)

Appropriate clothing and protective footwear must be worn at all times. 

Assessment Procedures
A combination of practical and written assessments will be conducted. The written portion may consist of both assignments and a formal examination.
