Marine Radio
Subjects from TDM20307 - Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations - Coxswain)
Description
This course provides you with the skills and knowledge necessary to operate marine radiotelephone equipment to the designed marine VHF and MF/HF radio frequencies. The outcomes lead to a Marine Radio Certificate of Proficiency.
Careers & Pathways
This course satisfies the requirements of Schedule 5 in Section 2 of the Uniform Shipping Laws Code. It is based on the guidance provided by the Office of Maritime Communications (OMC).

The approximate cost to complete this course is: Standard $80.50 Concession $29.50.

Study Mode
Full-time over two days - 8.30am to 4.30pm.
Other information
You will need to provide the following items at your own cost:

  • An examination fee of $56 for the written test (cheque or money order payable to the University of Tasmania or credit card facility available)
  • One current passport photo
  • A notebook and pen are required for theory components.
Appropriate clothing and protective footwear must be worn at all times.

Assessment procedures
Observation and oral questioning techniques in practical assessment of operating procedures, maintenance and fault finding. A written test is conducted by an invigilator authorised by the Office of Maritime Communications.

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to transmit and receive information by marine radio or telephone on board a commercial vessel, including using marine VHF and HF radiotelephone in accordance with regulations, carrying out user maintenance and fault finding procedures on radio equipment and power supplies, and operating an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) and a search and rescue transponder (SART).
