Elements of Shipboard Safety
Subjects from TDM20307 - Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations - Coxswain)
Description
This course provides you with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Carry out the duties required of crew members during onboard emergencies
  • Use onboard life saving equipment to implement survival techniques during periods in the sea and in survival craft
  • Use onboard life saving equipment to assist in rescuing a person from the water
  • Identify potentially hazardous situations arising in the work environment and take appropriate action to minimise risk of injury.
Successful completion of this course is required for anyone working on board commercial vessels including tourism operations such as reef and diving boats.

Careers & Pathways
This certificate satisfies requirements for Elements of Shipboard Safety (ESS) under the National Standard for Commercial Vessels Section D4.2 as required by State registered authorities and is a pre-requisite for further licencing.
Entry Requirements
You must be a minimum of 16 years of age. As this course involves strenuous water activities, you may be required to complete a medical declaration prior to commencing training. There is a maximum of 16 participants per course (no exceptions).

Study Mode
Full-time over 3 days - 8.30am to 4.30pm.
Other information
Appropriate clothing and protective footwear must be worn at all times. Swimmers and towel are required for survival practice. A notebook and pen are required for theory components.

Assessment procedures
Written assignments and tests will take place, as well as practical demonstration of skills. Different organisations may conduct various aspects of the assessment. This course involves extinguishing fires and being in water.

This unit involves the basic skills and knowledge required to prevent, fight and extinguish fires on board a commercial coastal vessel, including taking action to minimise the risk of fire, maintaining a state of readiness to respond to fire emergencies, operating portable firefighting equipment, and carrying out firefighting operations.
