Congratulations to Innisfail 4th year apprentice, Dean Cann.
He joins fellow workmate, Michael Grimaz, as a recent Certificate IV in Engineering graduate and as a WorldSkills Australia North Queensland Gold Medal winner.
Both Dean and Michael graduated in November, 2011, with a Certificate IV in Engineering.
Dean studied for his Certificate IV in Engineering as a 4th year apprentice at Innisfail TAFE and Michael qualified for his certificate by upgrading his skills with TAFE's Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program.
They are employed by well-known local, Paul Crapella, at Johnstone Agricultural Machinery.
Michael won his WorldSkills Australia North Queensland Regional 'Turning' competition in 2003. Dean won his competition in August this year.
In the competition they competed against other tradespeople to complete a turning project which was judged against a national standard for WorldSkills Australia.
The regional competition encompasses Thursday Island, Cairns, Townsville, Airlie Beach, Mt Isa and everywhere in between.
The turning competition is designed to test the competitor's ability to complete a project by combining practical skills on a lathe and completing a job plan with exact analytical skills.
Competitors were given a drawing from WorldSkills Australia and had eight hours to select materials and lathe three precision mechanical parts to a precise tolerance that meets Australian Engineering standards.
Both Dean and Michael completed their projects well within the allowed time frame.
WorldSkills Australia is a national, not-for-profit organisation (established in 1981) that provides young Australians aged 23 and under the opportunity to gain new skills, compete against their peers in their chosen trade and fast-track their skills and career development.
Rod Groch, Workplace Assessor and Trainer in Engineering and CAD at Tropical North Queensland TAFE said, "The WorldSkills Australia competitions are excellent for tradespeople to put their learned skills to the test and gain the determination to succeed while under pressure."
