TAFE awards inaugural fashion scholarships

Careers in couture are on the cards for two students awarded Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE (TNQIT) Fashion Scholarships.
Napassawan Armstrong and Grace An were this week announced as the inaugural recipients of two $3000 fashion scholarships to study Certificate IV in Applied Fashion Design and Technology at TNQIT.
They will undertake the year-long Certificate IV program full-time at the Cairns TAFE Campus fashion and design centre.
TNQIT Director Jo Pyne congratulated the two scholarship winners on their success.
"Napassawan and Grace both presented outstanding portfolios to the judges and thoroughly deserve their scholarships," Ms Pyne said.
"They now have a great opportunity to take their natural design talent and flair to another level with the training they will receive through the fashion program.
"I'm confident that after a year at TAFE both students will have what it takes to make their mark in the fashion industry."
Ms Pyne said the scholarships would be offered again for 2010.
"TNQIT is proud to be able to support young emerging designers by providing the opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge, and I encourage anyone interested in applying for the scholarships to keep an eye out later in the year," she said.
The Certificate IV in Applied Fashion Design and Technology is a comprehensive qualification that provides high level training in fashion design, pattern making and garment creation.
The program, which has attracted 18 students this year, culminates in November with the annual TAFE Fashion Parade, a feature event on the region's fashion calendar.
