TAFE offers fee free training for childcare diplomas in 2009

Monday, 19 January 2009 11:26AM

Current and prospective childcare workers now can access fee free TAFE Diploma training.

Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE (TNQIT) is participating in a state-wide TAFE initiative that will provide fee free training for childcare Diploma and Advanced Diploma students commencing in Semester 1 2009.

The initiative is the result of an agreement between the Queensland Department of Education, Training and the Arts and the Federal Government which removes TAFE tuition fees for the Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Children's Services courses.

The Australian Government has provided $8.5 million nationally to support new and existing childcare workers to gain a vocational education and training qualification in early childhood.

TNQIT Institute Director Jo Pyne said the fee removal will go a long way to helping train the 14,000 additional workers needed in the Queensland childcare industry by 2010.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for childcare workers in the far northern region to upgrade qualifications and prospective new workers to enter the industry," Ms Pyne said.

"A Diploma can lead to new career paths and is often a stepping stone to University."

TNQIT delivers the Diploma of Children's Services flexibly from its Cairns, Innisfail, Atherton, Mareeba and Mossman campuses, with an external study option also available.
