About Cairns

A cosmopolitan, tropical city of 130,000 people, Cairns is famous worldwide as a tourist destination. Every year millions of visitors flock to the city to visit the magnificent Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage listed wet tropics rainforests, including the internationally-famous Daintree National Park.

No other place in Australia offers such a wonderful mix of sophisticated city life combined with the untouched natural wonders of the rainforest and reef.

Cairns offers all the cultural advantages of life in the big city (concerts, cinemas, theatre, the arts) combined with the perfect environment and climate for outdoor activities and adventures.

The city also boasts excellent sporting and public facilities, including the world-renowned Esplanade swimming lagoon on the edge of the Coral Sea. Cairns is  serviced by an international airport which accommodates direct flights to and from many overseas cities.

Cairns is famous for its tropical climate. Located midway between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Equator, Cairns experiences two distinct seasons - a winter period of mild temperatures and low rainfall and a summer period of warmer temperatures and high rainfall.

Winter, known locally as the dry season, typically begins in May and runs through to October. The tropical summer extends from November to April, and is known as the wet season. Cairns' average annual temperature ranges from a maximum of 31.4C down to a minimum of 17C.

Most of the TAFE academic year falls within the pleasant dry season, when the daily temperature averages around 26C.

Cairns has an annual rainfall of 2010 mm. Seawater temperatures vary from a minimum 23.2C in July to a maximum of 28.7C in February. Summer clothes are worn all year round in Cairns.

Loose comfortable clothing is best, and hats and sunscreen should be worn at all times.
